Registrations of .nz domain names grew by 6.91%, or 33,657, to 702,311 in the 12 months to the end of November according to the final Domain Name Commission’s .NZ Newsletter for 2017. And following a restructure of the organisation where Jordan Carter was appointed InternetNZ Group Chief Executive, it also marks a farewell from longstanding employees, Domain Name Commissioner Debbie Monahan and Jay Daley, New Zealand Registry Services Chief Executive, who both depart on 12 January.
The 6.91% increase in .nz registrations is more than double the average for country code top level domains around the world. According to the latest Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief, in the year to the end of September ccTLD registrations increased by 3.2%. Not including registrations for .tk, for which there is no registration fee, the global increase for the year to the end of September was 3.1%.
Registrations across the various 2LDs and at the second level were varied as has been the trend for some time. Increases occurred for .nz, which made up 19,379 of the registration increase, taking their total at the end of November to 132,810, while registrations for .co.nz grew to 503,144 from 487,296, an increase of 15,848, .ac.nz increased by 71 to 2,334 and .schools increased by 73 to 3,600. Registrations for .cri.nz (7) and .parliament.nz (11) stayed the same while for the other 10 2LDs decreased.
There is also an update on the Conflicted Names Process. The newsletter notes that “following the deadline to lodge a preference for Conflicted Names on 18 October 2017, a number of registrants who had not lodged a preference for the shorter, .nz version of their name were removed from their conflicts. More than 3,500 conflicts were resolved as only one registrant remained, allowing the remaining registrant to register the shorter version of their name, if they wished.”
