While .com proves to be unstoppable, with domains under management growing to 144.0 million, from 137.6 million, in the last 12 months, it was a mixed bag for the remainder of the top 10 TLDs from 12 months ago with 3 of those making the top 10 at the end of September 2018, all gTLDs, showing declines in the year to September 2019, according to the latest Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief [pdf] released Thursday.
The remainder of the top 10 as of 31 October were the free .tk (Tokelau) with 25.1 million (up from 21.5 million as of 31 September 2018), .cn (China) with 23.0m (up from 22.7m), .de (Germany) 16.3m (up from 16.2m), .net 13.4m (down from 14.1m), .uk (United Kingdom) 13.3m (up from 11.9m), .org 10.0m (down from 10.3m), .tw (Taiwan), new entry in the top 10 up to 6.8m, .nl (Netherlands) 5.9m (up from 5.8m), while .info drops out of the top 10.
The report shows that at the end of the third quarter of
2019 there were 359.8 million domain name registrations across all top-level
domains (TLDs), an increase of 5.1 million, or 1.4%, compared to the second
quarter of 2019. Registrations have grown by 17.4 million, or 5.1%, year over
year.
Verisign’s 2 biggest top-level domains continued their ongoing trend with .com growing and .net declining. New .com and .net registrations totalled 9.9 million at the end of the third quarter of 2019, compared to 9.5 million registrations at the end of the third quarter of 2018.
Total country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) registrations were 161.8 million at the end of the third quarter of 2019, an increase of 3.1 million, or 2.0%, compared to the second quarter of 2019. ccTLDs increased by 12.5 million registrations, or 8.4%, year over year. The top 10 ccTLDs, as of 30 September, were:
Total new generic top-level domains (new gTLDs) registrations were 24.0 million at the end of the third quarter of 2019, an increase of 0.9 million registrations, or 4.0%, compared to the second quarter of 2019. New gTLDs increased by 0.6 million registrations, or 2.4%, year over year. The top 10 new gTLDs represented 58.8% of all new gTLD registrations. The following chart shows new gTLD registrations as a percentage of overall TLD registrations, of which they represent 6.7%, as well as the top 10 new gTLDs as a percentage of all new gTLD registrations for the third quarter of 2019.
As of 30 September, there were 47 geographical new gTLDs delegated, which can be described as having a geographical focus and that have more than 1,000 registrations. The following chart on the left summarises their registrations for the listed ccTLDs and the corresponding geographical new gTLDs within the same geographic region. In addition, the chart on the right highlights the top 10 geographical new gTLDs as a percentage of the total geographical TLDs.
This next chart represents the top 10 trending keywords registered in English in .com and .net registrations for the third quarter of 2019. Specifically, the list reflects the keywords with the highest percentage of registration growth relative to the preceding quarter. This method is intended to highlight the new and changing keywords seen in .com and .net domain name registrations. By evaluating the keywords with the largest percentage shift, the top 10 that have seen a significant shift in end-user interest quarter over quarter can be identified.
