I’ve been experimenting with new diets and supplements lately to help me fight the effects of aging on my workouts and ability to think. The hardest part of getting older is recovery. You can still do almost anything at my age (I’m almost 50) but the recovery from it takes longer every year. I still like to run 30-40 miles every weekend and it used to not effect runs later in the week. Now it takes me until Wednesday to get fresh legs each week. A lot of the approaches to eating like Keto and vegetarian just don’t give the right ingredients to live the lifestyle I live. I’m too active to feed off my own fat. I have to eat calories, meat, some carbs, and time my food to replenish everything that is lost. But I don’t eat out and I can’t remember the last time I had something with grease. I don’t take anything to0 fancy, a multivitamin, a probiotic, 2 liters of water in the morning, Alpha Brain and two bananas. I usually follow a 5:30 am run each day with a cold shower for my muscles and a big breakfast to fuel. And I eat dessert one day a week. Usually on my long run of 20 miles or more. And no eating after dinner except for a banana or nothing. A most importantly sleep. 7 hours or more every day. It’s the key to everything. And how do I know my program is working?
My heart rate. I record it 24 hours a day. If I have gotten enough sleep, my body is rested, and I am not anxious about anything, my resting heart rate when I wake up is 48. If I don’t get enough sleep or my body is tired from a previous run, I wake up at 53-55. If it’s higher than then I am either sick or worried about something. Those number vary depending on the season and what shape I’m in. But I know my body. Nothing tells you more about your health than your heartbeat. I stack years of morning and daily runs on top of each other to see how training is going compared to past runs. It sounds obsessive but really its just training and planning in an attempt to do something well. And by well I mean living and treating my body well. I even wear a retainer at night to keep my teeth from turning into old people teeth. You know what they are. Look at a person that s 60 or 70 and look at their bottom teeth. They look like a pileup on the highway during a snowstorm. Call it vain, but millions of people spend money on plastic surgery to look better. I figure I would do the things I can do to make me feel better and stay anxiety free and I’m hoping the bonus is that doing that helps me look better as well. Enjoy your Sunday.
