The domain name Video.Games just sold for a huge amount of money. $183,000 to be exact. I reported that HERE. Here is a story how “Domain Names Matter” to my good friend Steven Glick.
Steven is a life long gamer and a recent domainer. He has owned a few domains off and on for close to 20 years for various projects but never truly got into domaining until a couple years ago. He saw the value in EMDs (exact match domains) and started to take domaining a little more serious right around the time the new gTLDs were starting to come out which was just a couple years ago.
Being a gamer is his first and foremost passion. He has played many video games and has visited thousands of video game related sites. He knows what he likes when it comes to sites promoting games/accessories, selling games/accessories and helping the gaming community in general.
He knows what he wants in a video gaming site and believes he can do it 100% better than anything that is out there right now.
How do you break into an almost trillion dollar market and try capturing a fraction of that money? Well, you go buy the absolute best domain name out there which is VideoGames.com. Uhhh, ok that may not be possible unless you have millions of dollars or are the son of the owner of CBS. VideoGames.com is owned by CBS Interactive Inc. and is an active site rated at 4,131 globally and rated even higher here in the US. It is rated at site 1,077 in the USA at the time of this posting.
So, what now? Ok, Steve needed exact match domains in order to think about making his dream a reality and breaking into this video gaming industry so he bought into the new gTLDs. Last year around May, GoDaddy was promoting one of the new gTLDs it was selling – .game. As soon as he saw that as an extension that’s when he said, Ok I am gonna get into this extension and make a play for one of the best I can get. He put in a bid of $6k, and actually won that domain! Now he thinks he has his foot in the door of the video gaming industry. This even came with an email from Mr. Frank Schilling himself, saying something like, Congrats, you have a great one there. Hang onto it.
This is the moment when Steve gets very serious about domains now.
But wait, besides the VideoGames.com which is now untouchable because CBS owns it, he needs to make one more move to be taken seriously. There is a new gTLD extension on the block which is .games. The one and only domain he now believes he needs is to cement his being into this industry is Video.games.
Rightside Registry owns Video.games. Steve approaches Rightside. Ok, I want this domain at any expense even if I have to sell my house. What are your terms? $180k. Well, I don’t have it all right now. Will you finance? Sure we will finance but it’s gonna cost you just a little juice over a couple years. Ok that seems painless. What about those crazy renewal fees I have been reading about? Don’t worry about it. We got you. Here is a contract that you will only have to pay $xx per year forever. Ok, deal!

Me personally, I have never been a huge new gTLD fan and have only put a few dollars (x,xxx) into one new gTLD domain but I can undeniably see that there are some making money in these extensions. Mostly the registrars. I do hope for Stevens sake that he makes all the right moves with these couple category killer new Gs and ends up living his dreams with whatever he builds out in an industry he loves.
I have a plug here that I really wanted to give him. Like I said, he has invested in some new gTLD domains and has given me a list to share with you, if anyone out there is interested. I really want to see him pay this domain off as soon as possible so he can concentrate on building out one Bad Ass gaming site!
